SAFE FLOOD RELIEF & EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE
Project Details:
SpandaanB Austin would like to ask for your support in helping the victims of recent floods in Bangladesh. SpandaanB is partnering with SAFE to provide flood relief in various flood-affected areas. SAFE is a leading lifesaving organization in BD that aims to protect lives and provide emergency medical aid to victims of any disaster.
SAFE is already conducting relief work in one of the worst affected areas – in kurigram disctrict, nageshwari upzilla – in Nunkhaon and Narayanpur unions, where the Brahmaputra (from Assam), enters Bangladesh, and which is also the point where the confluence of the Dhudkumar (from Bhutan) and Darla (from Shiliguri) rivers occurs, which means in Bangladesh any one of these rivers rising results in large scale flooding of the surrounding area. Hence even where some areas have experienced receding waters, many areas are still flooded and face further rise in floods. SAFE has two teams in this area. Each SAFE team normally consists of a group of volunteers who carry out the work: 3 people in the medical team (2 doctors and one first aider), and other volunteers for activities like water distribution, tube well disinfection and tube well repairing. In the past few days, over 300 tube wells have been repaired and disinfected allowing over 18,000 people to have access to safe drinking water again. The number of teams deployed will depend on the amount of funds that we can raise – so please make a generous donation for this flood relief effort at DONATE link on top-left or http://www.spaandanb.org/austin/donate.html. All donations are tax deductable and literally every dollar makes a difference (each dollar makes an additional 50 litres of drinking water available to victims desperately needing germ-free water to drink).
Partner Organizations
Safety Assistance For Emergencies (SAFE) is a trust located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Its mission is to save lives by preventing injuries and deaths caused by natural calamities and unsafe practices at work and home, in schools and communities, and on the roads in a sustainable way through awareness, educational campaign, emergency response, product and service development, training and advocacy.
Since its inception in 2001, SAFE has partnered with a number of responsible organizations who have helped SAFE achieve sustainable outcomes in a range of health, safety and environmental projects in Bangladesh. SAFE arranges a number of awareness campaigns (Hand wash, safe water, road safety, heat wave, earthquake safety, coastal cleanup, waste management)every year on various safety related issues in Bangladesh in partnership with various organizations or forums (Clean up Bangladesh, Make Road Safe, Bangladesh Earthquake Society, Clean Dhaka Week etc.).
With support from Gazi Tank and CARE (under a US AID funded project), SAFE distributed safe water in flood affected areas of Demra during the flood of 2004. Consequently, based on the success of this activity, SAFE undertook Tube Well Disinfected program supported by Global Heavy Chemicals Ltd. and hence created a sustainable solution for pure drinking water during the post flood disaster situation.
